But if you want to know how to choose the right dog breeds for kids, here is our recommendation.

Border Collie

Coming in at 10th place and in a surprise, just keeping out the Labrador Retriever from the top 10, is the bouncy and brilliant Border Collie.

Top Traits – Famously smart, the Border Collie is quick to learn, and eager to keep busy. High energy too, they love to be out and about.

Fantastic For – An active family, and someone with lots of land, this breed needs lots of activity. The Border Collie is the ultimate working dog, ideal for animal herding, but also a fantastic family pet.

Shiba Inu

An increasingly popular breed, with their compact size, making them more suitable for apartment life than their cousin the Akita. A funny, funny nature, and bright, friery coat making the Shiba Inu a very eye catching breed.

Top Traits – Loyal and devoted to their owners, they tend to bond very closely. Fiery and spirited, the Shiba Inu is a very outgoing and bold, not shy at all.

Fantastic For – An ideal companion, the Shiba Inu is suited to family life, or being with one person. Adaptable to apartment life too, as long as they get a good couple of walks a day.

Akita

Just getting ahead of its rival, the Shiba, the Akita comes in as the most popular of the oriental breeds. Big, bold and powerful, the Akita can have an intimidating look, but they also exude nobility.

Top Traits – Utterly loyal and devoted, they are also extremely sweet and affectionate to their family too. Muscular and spirited, and with their innate hunting instinct, they love to chase.

Fantastic For – This is a strong willed breed, better suited to a knowledgeable dog owner. But once trained well and socialized, you will meet no better family guardian than the Akita.

English Cocker Spaniel

The first of the English breeds that dominate this list, the English Cocker Spaniel has surged in popularity. With so many colours they come in, this is a breed with so much to offer in looks, but in character too.

Top Traits – Super energetic, with lots of life, energy and bounce, the English Cocker Spaniel is a breed that adapts well to all lifestyles, and just loves to be out and about.

Fantastic For – As a companion dog, the English Cocker Spaniel is perfect. They love to be with people so much that they are best in a home where they are not alone too too long. They are super, super kid friendly too!

Yorkshire Terrier

Just outside the top 5, and the second of our four English Breeds, is the small in size, but big in personality Yorkshire Terrier. This breed is consistently popular right around the world.

Top Traits – With their long silky coat and eye catching topknot, the Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most glamorous breeds of the dog world. They may be small, but they are bold too, and have the spirit and chase typical of the terrier.

Fantastic For – More suitable as a companion dog than a family dog, and they are more suited to older children. A home where they are not alone too much is ideal, and an apartment is perfect.

Golden Retriever

Now we come to the big hitters, and it is no surprise to see the Golden Retriever here. A long term popular breed, the Golden Retriever has long been one of the top dogs of the western world, and it’s popularity is worldwide.

Top Traits – Super affectionate, and friendly towards everyone, both human and canine. The Golden Retriever is also a very smart breed too, famed as a grand guide dog, and easy to train.

Fantastic For – Honestly the Golden Retriever is just about the ultimate family dog. Playful, happy, fun loving and great with kids. They are a big breed though, so a small apartment isn’t ideal.

German Shepherd Dog

A more modern breed than most on this list, bred only from the 19th Century. Yet it is no wonder the German Shepherd exploded with popularity very quickly, and is a regular amongst the most popular breeds.

Top TraitsBrains and nobility! The German Shepherd was bred to be a working dog, and this makes them super smart. Unerringly loyal too, they are dedicated to their owners.

Fantastic For – Anyone with a yard is suitable for a German Shepherd. They love their family, whether the littlest children or an older owner. They make the perfect guard dog too.  Be sure to check out protection dogs for sale.

Top Traits – Sweetness, love and warmth. The loveliest lap dog, they are happy to have cuddles, snuggles and lots of play. The Cavalier is usually friendly with everyone they meet, and good with other dogs.

Fantastic For – A perfect breed for the older person, the Cavalier is a grand companion dog. But be warned it is still a Spaniel, so expect it to go after any squirrel it sees!

Havanese

Just missing out on the top spot, is the king of the ‘toy breeds’ the Havanese. There is a certain grace to the breed, no doubt because they were originally bred for the Cuban aristocracy!

Top Traits – Known as the velcro dog, the Havanese is happiest right by its owner’s side, or on their lap! Kid friendly, dog friendly, and smart too, they are a great ‘all rounder’.

Fantastic For – Like the Cavalier, the Havanese is a super dog for an older person, as they are very gentle, warm and loving in the home. But they love kids too, and make fantastic family dogs.

French Bulldog

It was only ever gonna be the French Bulldog. This breed, with their squishy faces, and their cuddly crinkles, have in recent years, ballooned in popularity, and there is hardly a street without a Frenchie having fun on it. They are popular worldwide now, from Australia to America.

Top Traits – Fun, silliness, happiness and snoozing! Half a happy go lucky, fun loving, playful and downright clownish breed, and half a relaxed, layabout that loves to sleep on your lap. The Frenchie with their hilarious expressions and their dramatic zoomies, is the most entertaining of dog breeds.

Fantastic For – Just about anyone is suitable for a French Bulldog. They can live fine in apartments, but also love to have a garden. This is not a breed to leave alone for too long, or they get too sad. They are wonderful with everyone, love to meet people, and will say hello to anyone.

Benefits of Having a Pet Dog in a Family

While it is important to note that not everyone has the time, resources, or desire to have a pet dog, for those who do, there can be several benefits to the mother and the family.

1. Companionship

Companionship is a benefit of having a pet dog because dogs provide unconditional love and emotional support, which can help reduce feelings of loneliness and increase feelings of happiness and well-being. As a mother, having a dog as a companion can teach children important values such as responsibility, empathy, and kindness.

2. Stress Relief

Owning a pet dog can provide stress relief due to several reasons. Dogs can offer comfort and emotional support, and spending time with them can increase the levels of oxytocin and serotonin in the brain, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. Additionally, petting or stroking a dog can have a calming effect, lower blood pressure, and heart rate, and reduce cortisol, a stress hormone.

3. Exercise

Having a pet dog as a companion can benefit exercise, providing an opportunity for regular physical activity such as walking, running, or playing. As a mother, having a dog can inspire kids to play outside and support a healthy lifestyle for the entire family. Additionally, caring for a dog can involve feeding, grooming, and cleaning, contributing to a more active daily routine.

4. Instilling responsibility

Teaching responsibility through pet ownership helps children develop a sense of accountability, empathy, and caretaking skills. Having a pet dog can help children learn responsibility and self-discipline by teaching them how to take care of other living thing, such as feeding, grooming, and walking the dog. Additionally, taking care of a pet dog can teach children essential life skills, such as time management and problem-solving, which can be helpful in many aspects of their lives.

5. Safety

Depending on the breed, having a pet dog as a mother can provide safety benefits in several ways. Dogs are naturally protective of their young and instinctively guard and defend their puppies from potential threats. This can include warning off intruders, barking to alert the household of danger and even physically intervening to protect their young. Additionally, having a dog in the family can deter potential burglars or other criminal activity, as the presence of a barking dog can signal that the home is protected and may not be an easy target.

However, it is essential to note that owning a pet dog is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly. Dogs require a lot of time, attention, and care, and it’s vital to ensure that the family can provide for the dog’s needs before bringing one into the home.
