The Complete and Only New Home Checklist a Homeowner Will Ever Need

Did you just buy your very first home recently and are ready to move in? Here’s the complete and only new home checklist a homeowner will ever need.

There are a number of easily forgettable tasks that you’ll have to perform before and after you relocate.  Be sure to plan for traveling with kids as well if you have a family.

We’re going to give you a hand by giving you a new home checklist!

Without knowing what you need to do and figuring out how to do it beforehand, you might remember things months down the road that you should have already done.

The process of moving into a new place is exciting, but also overwhelming. As long as you stay organized, you can get everything done quickly so you can enjoy your new home when you move in!

Your New Home Checklist

Whether you’re moving from an apartment to a home, using movers, or doing it all yourself, you should have a checklist.

As soon as you start writing things down, you’ll see that there’s a lot more to do than you thought.

Transfer and Connect

First, you’ll want to transfer all your utilities before you close escrow. This includes gas, hydro, electricity, and water. You should also transfer your internet and cable, or disconnect them at your old home and reconnect at the new one.

Change the Locks

When you move into the new place, it’s always good to change the locks before you get settled in. Not that the former owners would ever decide to come uninvited, but you just want to have that sense of security.

You can also get your home security system setup if there isn’t one already. There are many good options available through companies like Simplisafe, Brinks, and Frontpoint.

Change Your Address

Change the address on your bills or they’ll keep getting sent to your old house.

This will include your bank, credit cards, and insurance, among other things. You can also contact USPS to have any mail that’s in transit forwarded to the new address.

Cleaning

As soon as you get all of the boxes in the house, you’ll want to go through and clean everything.  You should do this before you unpack because you might not get to some of the areas again for a while.

Test Detectors

Go through and put new batteries in all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, then test them to ensure they’re working properly.

Unpacking

Now the real fun begins. Begin unpacking all of your boxes, starting with the most important stuff first. This might take months, so spend a few hours every weekend tackling this job.

Testing Your House

Test all of your appliances and make any small renovations and repairs you need to before you settle in. This is the type of thing that might sit for a while if you don’t do it right away.

House Warming Party

Once you’re satisfied with the state of the house, throw a house warming party so your friends and family can check out your new digs!

These Things Take Time

Now that you have a new home checklist, you can slowly accomplish all of the important tasks associated with moving.

It’s going to take a while, but once it’s done, you can start on your renovation and decor plans.
