Using a Standard Dog Harness
Put your dog in a standing or sitting position and slip the harness over their head. Make sure it’s positioned so that the D-ring (where the leash latches onto) is on their back.
Carefully slip your dog’s leg through the first leg hole. It should be between the loop that goes around the neck and the loop that goes around the ribs.
Buckle the harness so that their other leg is in the proper leg hole. Depending on the fit, you may have to loosen or tighten the strap.
Using a No Pull Dog Harness
No-pull harnesses are different from regular harnesses in that the leash attaches at the front, as opposed to the back; this will prevent them from pulling on the lead. If anything, they’re a great option for larger dogs (find out more).
Start by slipping the harness over their head. Bring the strap up between their front legs and snap the buckles on both sides.
The metal ring for the leash should be high on their chest.
Adjust the harness around the chest area so that it fits snugly; you should only be able to slide a finger or two between the strap and their body.
Using a Step-In Dog Harness
Step-in harnesses are a great option for those who are looking for something that’s easy to put on.
Start by placing the harness on the ground. Make sure that it’s aligned correctly.
Slip your dog’s front legs through the right and left harness loops and pull it up onto their back so that the loops rest against their belly.
Once their legs are in the proper loops, pick up the ends of the harness and clip them together on their back; it should be tight enough so that you can’t pull the harness over their head.
