How to choose the right e-liquid

Whether you’re new to vaping or have been doing it for a while, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the hundreds of choices of e-liquids that are available, and there’s always a decision to be made:

Which flavours do you like?

How strong do you need it?

Do you want a deep vape cloud or not?

Here’s some things you can think about when shopping for your next vaping liquid.

Which flavour e-liquid should I choose?

One of the biggest benefits of vaping is that there’s so many flavours to pick from.

The flavour you choose is particularly important if you’ve just made the switch from tobacco.

You want to make sure your liquid is oozing with flavour to help curb your nicotine cravings.

Whether you’d prefer something more fruity, or something that tastes like your favourite dessert, there’s plenty for you to choose from.

Here are some of the UK’s favourite e-liquids:

  • Apple Army Corps – Cotton and Kanthal
  • Five States – Baccy Roots
  • Liquid Gold – Doozy Vape
  • Purple – The Kraken

Should I choose a VG or PG based liquid?

All e-liquids contain either VG (Vegetable Glycerine) or PG (Propylene Glycol) which come with their own benefits.

PG based liquids have better and stronger flavours and are responsible for the ‘throat hit’ part of your vaping experience – making them a great option for if you’re wanting to feel the same sensation as smoking.

VG based liquids are responsible for producing larger vapor clouds, but aren’t as big on flavour.

What’s the best VG:PG ratio?

There’s no best defined ratio as it all comes down to your preferences and what you want from your vaping experience.

  • Flavour

For maximum flavour, choose an e-liquid with a balanced, 50:50 ratio of PG:VG or favour PG content in your liquid and look for a 60:40 ratio.

  • Throat hit

E-liquids with high PG ratios will have a more noticeable throat hit – look for PG:VG ratios around 60:40 or 70:30.

  • Big clouds

For bigger vapor clouds, you should prioritise VG content in your e-liquid. Look for a PG:VG ratio of 30:70 or 20:80 that will give you a much thicker liquid, and therefore produce denser clouds of vapor.

Remember that thicker liquids aren’t suitable for all vape devices, so check you’ll be able to use it before you buy.

How much e-liquid do you need?

Think about how often you’ll be using your e-cig – will it be something you do occasionally or is it a big habit you can’t shake?

If it’s something you’re not planning on using everyday, then it’s probably best to buy liquids as and when you need them rather than stock piling them all at once.

Your liquids will expire, and if you leave them too long the flavour can reduce.

Whether you’re a light or heavy smoker, first buy 4 or 5 bottles and budget for half a bottle per day, seeing where you are after a day or two.

Are you testing and trying out different liquids?

If you’re more experienced with vaping, you’ll already have your favourite flavours and know which strength is best for you.

When just starting out, it’ll be useful to test a few different e-liquids, helping you to find the flavours you like and which strength is going to work for you.

If you’re just switching to vaping and consider yourself to have been a heavy smoker (20+ cigarettes per day), it’ll be best to opt for an 18mg strength to help with the nicotine cravings.

You’ll be able to reduce your nicotine intake gradually, to 12mg then 6mg as you find yourself craving less.

If you find yourself overwhelmed by choice and struggling to find a good e-liquid, it’s a good idea to go find a specialist supplier.

They’ll be able to help you find something you’ll love based on your preferences and what you’re looking for.
