How to Make an Aloe Bath Bomb

If you want to dabble in bath bomb-making, you may want to start with an aloe bath bomb. Aloe is an uncomplicated, gentle, and moisturizing ingredient that you may want to work on while giving you something to look forward to for your next bath!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • ½ cup sodium lauryl sulfoacetate (SLSA)
  • 0.5 oz aloe extract
  • Clean and fresh fragrance oil of your choice
  • Green soap colorant (optional)
  • Witch hazel spray

Tools needed:

  • Round, small, silicone soap molds
  • Large glass bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Dropper
  • Rubber or plastic gloves
  • Surgical mask
  • Flat surface

Instructions:

  1. Wear gloves to protect your nail polish (if you do have some) and your surgical mask.
  2. In a large bowl, combine citric acid and baking soda. Use your hands to break up clumps. Since citric acid can take off nail polish, it’swearing gloves is best.
  3. Add the SLSA and use your hands to mix it well. It’s extremely powdery, so make sure you’re in a well-ventilated room away from a fan when adding it to the mixture. This is where the surgical mask becomes beneficial – it would protect you from inhaling and sneezing this powdery substance.
  4. Add drops of green soap colorant and mix them with your hands between every few drops. Break up the drops of color into the powders. Don’t add too much, as it may color your tub. Coloring is mostly for aesthetic purposes to indicate it’s made of aloe vera – but you don’t have to add it if you choose not to.
  5. Once the color is thoroughly mixed with the powders, add the aloe extract. Using your hands, mix in the extract well. The additional moisture can help mix in color, too.
  6. Add the fragrance oil last and mix it thoroughly with your hands.
  7. Check the moisture level of your bath bombs. If it’s too dry and powdery, or if you think it would not form well, add sprays of witch hazel until the mixture has a similar texture to wet sand. It must hold its shape when squeezed in your palm.
  8. Fill each cavity in the soap mold with the bath bomb mixture and press it firmly with your fingers. Allow it to sit for at least two hours overnight.
  9. Once the bath bombs are completely dry, press the back of each cavity gently to release it from the mold. It can be delicate, so be careful.
  10. Now that it’s ready to use, drop two to three of these bath bombs into a tub with water. To help promote more bubbles, place it in the tub while you’re filling it up with water.
